New York - December 2001
Ground Zero
I visited what's become known as Ground Zero twice. The first day was a Monday full of drizzle with the only people out being mainly tourists. It gave me a strange feeling of being a tourist and gawking at a tragedy. However, I had come that first day to see if it was appropriate to bring the kids the following day. The actual site is blocked from street side view.  The day before, the workers had removed the last remnants of the tower visible from street level. Two days after we returned to Houston, NYC opened a walkway above street level for people to witness the devastation themselves. Christina and Harrison returned with me on a day that was cold but clear. There were many more people on this trip with a healthy mix of tourists and natives. You could tell who was who. The locals were visibly upset while the tourists were busy gawking. Both trips made me uncomfortable. The above pictures are of makeshift memorials erected by wellwishers. The Christmas tree was placed there by the firefighters.
